recently, in the midst of travel (with its own unforeseen setbacks), family in town, and deadlines all throughout, i lost that cool i’ve worked so hard to cultivate. and y’all, it was rough. i’m talking a category 3 breakdown. it looked like me pulling my hair, swearing under my breath, and tears — lots of tears. and though he let me cry and gave me the space i needed, my partner thomas shared two words that would forever alter how i handle all future freakouts: force majeure. hearing those words, i stepped away from the impulsive attempts to completely rearrange my life. and instead, i simply allowed myself to be.
but what is force majeure? (besides apparently being an excellent swedish film.) defined as unforeseeable circumstances that prevent someone from fulfilling a contract, force majeure describes a situation in which the results are completely beyond our control. while my type a personality initially found it hard to grasp, when the concept sunk in, i felt a release.
